ROBERT SMELEK
Robert was introduced to golf course architecture at a young age, watching and learning from his father, Mike. Robert developed an interest for the profession and soon became fascinated with art and architectural design. At the age of 16 he decided to hone his interest and pursue a career in Landscape Architecture. He began working as an intern under Robert von Hagge, Rick Baril and Mike Smelek, during the summers, at the firm von Hagge, Smelek & Baril (vHS&B), learning the intricacies of the business and the design process. He continued to pursue this career by attending Texas A&M University where he graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture in 2008. After graduation Robert was hired by vHS&B and continued to develop his skills as a golf course architect. When Smelek Design was formed in 2011 Robert became an integral part in implementing the residential and commercial design aspect of the firm utilizing his expertise in CAD, 3D modeling and graphic illustrations.

Robert has been featured in The Houston Chronicle, 2024 Houston Press Best of Houston. Smelek Design has continued the legacy with a recent renovation project garnering a finalist award in an international competition as well as a fourth-place finish in Golf Inc. Magazine’s Development of the Year 2023 for the East River 9, a nine-hole, par 3 course and entertainment venue.
